Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique that uses a fine filament needle to reduce muscle pain, spasm and stiffness. It is called “dry” needling since no fluid is injected with the needles. Dry needling can be helpful in patients with muscle strains, low back pain, headaches, neck pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, tendinitis (tendinopathy) and more.

We often send a small electrical current to the needles once they are inserted into the body. Your muscles are constantly receiving electrical signals from your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves). When in pain,  muscles tend to guard and spasm as a protective mechanism. While this is done with good intentions from your nervous system, the muscle guarding/spasms sometimes persist after the injury has gone away and you no longer need your muscles to guard your joint to limit motion. The artificial electrical current from electrical stimulation unit into your muscles acts as a “Control, Alt, Delete” for your nervous system, resulting in reduced muscle tone and spasms leading to less pain. This allows increased participation in active interventions, such as exercise. Dry needling is a very safe technique.

Hear from Our Patients

It is not an exaggeration to say that Sparks Physical Therapy, and specifically Dr Jamie Schaub, changed the quality of my life. I suffered with recurring back/hip problems for over 10 years. During that time I went to two other physical therapy practices, three different chiropractors, and an orthopedic surgeon. They only provided marginal improvements. The surgeon’s office implied surgery was inevitable.
At Sparks, they carefully listened to me describe the issues, evaluated my physical condition, and then began a program of light exercises that became more rigorous with time.
Dr Jamie Schaub worked magic on by back, and after 10 weeks, sent me home with a program to stay in good shape. I am 70 years old, and six months after finishing with Sparks, I am pain free, have better strength, stamina, and balance than at 55. Thank you Dr Jamie!

Brett specializes in one on one treatment. None of this "you work that machine while I tend to this other person." Our sessions are always slightly different and more rigorous as he tracks my improvement. My shoulder improved after just a single visit and is well on the way to full recovery.
